Confirmation

Receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Through the sacrament of confirmation, those who have been born anew in baptism receive the inexpressible Gift, the Holy Spirit, by which, they are endowed…with special strength.

Pope Paul VI, Apostolic Constitution on the Sacrament of Confirmation.

General Information about the Sacrament of Confirmation

What is Confirmation?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says : "Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the "sacraments of Christian initiation"... For "by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed." (CCC, #1285)

Today, our understanding of this sacrament is that:

  • Confirmation is about INITIATION into the Church Community and actively participating as disciples
  • Confirmation is about STRENGTHENING our faith through receiving God's Grace
  • Confirmation is about MATURING as we commit to continuing to learn and grow in our faith
