Dear Parishioners,

The vacation season officially ends this week as children return to school both in the county school system and our own parish school. I certainly enjoyed my vacation to Western Maryland and Southwestern Virginia and I appreciate the warm greeting from many of you upon my return. It is nice to be back home!

Speaking of our parish school – there are still openings. St. John’s School offers a program of academic excellence in the Catholic school tradition. If you or someone you know is considering a Catholic School, St. Johns offers a great opportunity. I wish our principal Sister Linda and her faculty, staff and students well as they begin their new year.

This past week the parish received a gift of $39,575.01 from the estate of Margaret Huffman. Margaret, a devoted member of our Traditional Choir for many years, died this past December. She requested that her final gift to the parish be used in support of our music program. I am using this bequest to establish an “organ fund” for the upkeep, repair and upgrade of the Church’s pipe organ which is over 20 years old. Our master plan calls for a renovation of the church with the next 5 years. This renovation project will include needed work on the organ, including the replacement of its console. Ms. Huffman’s estate gift to the church is a wonderful example of how we in our own planning can make a final gift to the parish in support of its ministries and programs. Please remember St. Johns in your will!

As you know, Jamaica was hit hard last weekend by Hurricane Dean. I have sent several email messages to Fr. Joe Mndambo, the pastor of our sister parish St. Philomena. I have yet to hear from him. I suspect that electricity has yet to be restored to his rural community. Please keep the people of Jamaica in your prayers.

As parish life begins to pick-up as we approach Labor Day, I want to remind you of several upcoming events and programs:

R.C.I.A. – The process for initiating adults into the Church at Easter begins Sept. 15th.

Confirmation & First Reconciliation/First Eucharist Kick-Off Meeting For Parents – October 2 (Thursday) at 7 pm with a repeat meeting on October 7 (Tuesday) at 7 pm.

Have A Good Week!

Fr. Rick
