St. John's School Student Handbook
School Policies and Information
Detention
After school detentions will be held on Tuesday of each week from 3:00-4:00 PM.
Parents will receive notification of the reason for detention in writing. Parents are responsible
to arrange transportation home. Once assigned to detention a student
will not be excused without a written note of explanation from the
parent. Only valid excuses will be accepted. Excuses such as bowling,
softball practice, rehearsals, will not be considered.
Open House Parents are invited to visit their childrens classroom at stated
times throughout the year. Since these are regular school days,
we ask you to follow certain procedures.
- Do not bring younger children with you unless otherwise advised.
We have no facilities for them and they tend to distract teachers
and children who are expected to be performing in an ordinary
situation.
- Please do not converse among yourselves while class is in session.
- In departmental situation, please move with the children.
- In self-contained units, please stagger your time so classes do not
become over-crowded.
Parent-Teacher Interview
Any parent may request a conference by sending a note to the teacher
concerned. A minimum of twenty-four hours notice is required when requesting a conference.
The secretary is unable to set up a conference time for the teacher since she is unaware
of the teachers personal schedule.
If a parent has a complaint with any teacher please discuss the
matter with the teacher before asking the principal to arbitrate.
Please do not request class mothers or PTP representatives
to relay complaints and grievances. This in not in keeping with
professional ethics.
Interviews with Administration
Appointments with the principal or assistant principal may be made
by calling the school office (410) 647-2283.
Test Papers
All test papers are sent home to be signed and then returned to the
teacher. Teachers keep these papers on file. This system helps parents
and teachers to keep abreast of the students progress.
Progress Reports
Our school uses PowerSchool to record student progress throughout the year. Progress Reports (formerly called report cards) are issued three times a year, usually in the months of November, March and June.
Parent access via the Internet is offered to all parents. Parents are required to complete an on-line training session to learn how to access their child's information and to receive their child's access code. Parents have the opportunity to view their child's academic record on-line at the parent's convenience at any time throughout the school year. Parents who do not have access to the Internet may view their child's report at the public library or at school.
Parent Access and the use of PowerSchool do not replace the need for parents and teachers to communicate about the student's progress. If there is a concern about the student's progress, the teacher and parent should be in communication on a regular basis. It is the joint responsibility of the parent/guardian and the teacher to cooperate in remedying the situation. Parental interest is an essential ingredient for success. Working together, the parent and teacher can assist the child in making progress through constant encouragement and mutual assistance.
School Records
The School, upon proper notification of 24 hours, allows parents or legal
guardians to review the childs complete record in the presence
of the Principal or his/her delegate.
Books
We ask all students to take care of their text books and workbooks.
All books must be covered, kept clean and carried to and from school
in some type of book bag. Students are expected to pay for all non-consumable
textbooks which have been defaced or lost.
Library Rules
The Library plays an important role in the educational system.
Silence is to be maintained unless business necessitates speaking in soft tones. Each
class is scheduled for one period a week and reference periods may be utilized with
permission of the teacher and librarian.
Books are charged out for one week and a day. Students are responsible
to return books in good condition. Lost or damaged books must be
paid for. A fine of 10 cents per day, per book, is charged for overdue
books. Fines are not charged for the days school is not in session.
Each student receives notice each week of all library delinquencies.
In Grades 5-8, the third notice and all subsequent notices require
lunchtime recess detention everyday until the obligation is completely
fulfilled. In Grades 1-4, the third notice and all subsequent notices
require a parent's signature to acknowledge receipt of the notice.
Assembly Procedures
a.. Direct attention to the speaker or performer.
b. Applaud when appropriate. (NO disrespectful sounds or behavior will be tolerated.)
c. Await the announcement of dismissal procedure at the conclusion of the assembly and
exit in an orderly manner.

retuned to the teacher before children may go on the trip.

bring, the carrying of unnecessary items is discouraged and in some cases forbidden.
d. Children are to be dressed appropriately for the weather and for the type of trip.
e. Since this is a school day, students must report to school if not taking part in the
field trip. Failure to do so will result in an unexcused absence.

if they fail to meet academic or behavioral requirements.

Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Changing Classes
Students in departmental situations are to change classes orderly and

with emergency exit procedures. Instructions are posted in each
classroom. Students are to maintain silence and proceed quickly
and orderly to insure safety.
Illness
Students who become ill or who suffer an injury are to obtain a sick
pass from the teacher and report to the Nurse. If a student cannot
return to class an attempt will be made to notify the parent/guardian
or the person designated by the parent/ guardian.
Homework
Homework assignments will vary in content according to the subject
involved, the needs of the individual child, and the objectives of the teacher. The report
card grade for each subject includes the satisfactory completion of these assignments.
Parents should provide suitable conditions for home study for this purpose.
Should your child be absent due to illness, please request homework when calling office to
indicate absence. No homework may be picked up until dismissal time.
Early in the year, a procedure will be initiated in each homeroom to facilitate home
assignments for absentees.
Following this procedure, another member of the absentees
family or someone designated by the absentee will obtain assignments
and books necessary for each subject. Personal Property

by the teacher. This includes portable radios of any description,

students school clothing and articles.
Unclaimed items will be donated periodically to charitable organization
or to the used uniform store.

facilities for prolonged treatment but rather to be used for the immediate and temporary
care of injuries or illnesses occurring during the school day. If a child cannot return to
class within a half hour a parent will be called.
A registered nurse is in the Health Room during school hours five days a week. The nurse
will administer first aid to injured students and isolate ill students until they can be
taken home by a parent or guardian.
The nurse must be informed if a child has any special health problems.
It is very important that all emergency information be accurate
and up-to-date. Parents/ guardians are responsible for notifying
the nurse of any emergency information changes.
