Tomato and Veggie Garden

Tomato and Veggie Garden

The St. Vincent De Paul (SVDP) garden allows parishioners to grow fresh vegetables for members of the community seeking food assistance from our food pantry. In our second year, we have expanded our crops beyond tomatoes to a variety of vegetables, including beans, brocolli, peas, peppers, radishes, squash, and zuchinni. Parishioners interested in helping shcould contact Jen Mayer at 410, 647-4892 or using the contact a staff member feature.

Progress

Early Spring 2009 - School 3rd grade class planted peas, radishes, brocolli and lettuce
May 25th - Parish volunteers planted beans, tomotoes, yellow squash, zuchini, and peppers.
June 1st - 3rd grade class harvest radishes, given to SVDP food pantry clients next day. Realize bunnies have eaten all the peas and lettuce has failed.
June 9th - transplant some bean plants that were accidentally spilled into a pile of much, but have sprouted there anyway due to heavy spring rains.
Mid July - The first cherry tomatoes were harvested and distributed. Soon after the first crop of beans was ready as well.
August - Began distributing the big tomatoes, and two green peppers. Planted a second crop of beans and peas. Gave up on the brocolli, and have little hope that we will ever get a squash or zucchini. Not sure why they were unproductive all summer.
September - Continued to distribute tomatoes - large and small. Planted late crop of radishes.
October 1 - Picked the first of the second crop of beans, along with continued tomatoes. Green peppers have come back and are almost ready for distrution.
