Anointing of the Sick

A particular gift of the Holy Spirit. The first grace of this sacrament is one of strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that go with the condition of serious illness or the frailty of old age. This grace is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who renews trust and faith in God and strengthens against the temptations of the evil one, the temptation to discouragement and anguish in the face of death. This assistance from the Lord by the power of his Spirit is meant to lead the sick person to healing of the soul, but also of the body if such is God’s will. Furthermore, if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament should be celebrated at the beginning of a serious illness, injury, or prior to major surgery. In addition, the elderly may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. It may also be appropriate to anoint those enduring serious suffering related to mental health. Children may also be anointed if they have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by this sacrament.

Please notify the Parish Office at 410-647-4884 when a parishioner is hospitalized. If you or a loved one are unable to attend Mass during the time of a serious illness and wish to receive Holy Communion, call the Parish Office to make arrangements for visits.
